What are grains?

Grains are the seeds of grasses that are used for food. They are a category of small, hard, dry seeds or fruits that come from plants of the grass family (Poaceae). They are staple foods for a significant portion of the world's population and are good sources of carbohydrates, fiber, vitamins, and minerals. Grains are cultivated and harvested for various purposes, including human consumption, animal feed, and industrial uses.

Some of the most common grains include:

  • Wheat: One of the most widely cultivated staple grains grown and used globally, used to make various products like bread, pasta, cereals, and other baked goods.
  • Rice: A primary staple food for over half of the world's population. It comes in many varieties, such as long-grain, short-grain, and medium grain. There are also sub-groups within these types such as wild rice, black rice, red rice and others. These types of rice have different flavors and textures, and they can be used in a variety of dishes, but be sure to pick the right type for the type of dish being made, as they all have slightly different characteristics.
  • Oats: Oats are a good source of fiber and can help to lower cholesterol levels. They are often used to make oatmeal, granola, oat bread and cookies. But oat milk is a newer plant-based milk also available now in many places.
  • Barley: Often used for making beer and other alcoholic beverages, but it can also be used in bread, soup, stew, cereal, and as animal feed. Barley is a good source of fiber and protein.
  • Corn (Maize): Used as a staple food for many cultures and also processed into various food products, animal feed, and industrial materials. Cornbread, popcorn, tortillas are a few of the more popular uses of corn, but it can also be eaten raw - just peal and eat. Corn is often also used in more highly processed foods, and it could show up as HFCS (High Fructose Corn Syrup) as a sweetener, corn starch as a thickening agent, and corn meal as a filler in many foods.
  • Quinoa: Although technically a seed, quinoa is often considered a grain due to its culinary uses and nutritional similarities. It has gained popularity as a nutritious alternative to traditional grains. It is a good source of protein and fiber, and it is gluten-free. Quinoa can make a great alternative to rice to add a little more variety to meals. It is often cooked in similar ways to when cooking rice.

Grains are a healthy and nutritious food that can be enjoyed as part of a balanced diet. They are a good source of carbohydrates, fiber, vitamins, and minerals. When choosing grains, it is important to choose whole grains over refined grains. Whole grains are more nutritious and have a lower glycemic index, which can be an important aspect for those watching their blood sugar levels to keep them under control.
